Sabbatical In Israel

January through April 2006 I was on sabbatical in Israel. I was based in Jerusalem at Tantur Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies (www.come.to/tantur). This blog was initiated as a way for the inspiring members of my congregation to experience something of my "sacred time away."

MY COMPANIONS

Most interesting people I am studying with! There are nine of us in the sabbatical program with a smattering of other persons passing through on specialized visits of one sort or another. Let me introduce to you my eight companions...

Hugh is a RC priest from Scotland who is presently ministering with young Roman Catholics ages 20 to 30 years in the Manchester area of England.

John is a RC priest from Ireland belonging to the Columban Missionary Society ministering in Santiago, Chile.

Theres is a Sister of Mercy. She has been responsible for the formation of new women into the order in St. Lois and Laredo. She now is retired and lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

Patrick C. is a very funny Irish RC priest ministering a parish near Killarney, Ireland.

Werner is Lutheran and is working on his Doctorate with a thesis concerning the biblical concept of "covenant."

Pat H. is originally from St. Louis and is a missionary RC Priest working with the poor in Bolivia, SA. where he is both a parish priest and co-ordinator of some 60,000 Christians in various communities.

Fran is from Boston and is a School Sister of Notre Dame. She has been a principal of an all girls school in the inner city.

Timothy is a Benedictine Monk from Yorkshire, England. He has taught at a residential High School and is now working at the Vatican.

Frans is an RC priest and is presently in between ministries. He has been the principal of a secondary school near Melbourne and will be returning to East Timor to establish a teachers college.

If the first formal day of the sabbatical program is any indication, this will be a rich time indeed!
